Being a Thinking Environment: A Natural Sequence of Questions - Nancy Kline

When the human mind breaks through, what questions has it just asked itself?�

In this workshop Nancy will take us through a sequence of questions she thinks the human mind uses to remove key blocks in its thinking. She will propose that we learn these questions. And she will demonstrate that uninterrupted attention and silence can generate these same questions, sometimes leading to breakthroughs with virtually no input from the coach.

Mastery in In-house Coaching - Liz MaCann

This session will look at how to lift the perception of in-house Coach from a pale shadow of a �proper � Coach to the Coach of choice.� We will consider:

  • why do we have internal Coaches?
  • how does an internal Coach get credibility?
  • what do the clients think?
  • the difference between internal and external Coaches?
  • when to use which?
  • what do we look for in an external Executive Coach?
  • how do we run the two strands in tandem?
  • what does it take to create a coaching culture?

A new framework for developmental coaching - Tatiana Bachkirova

Coaches often say that their coaching is developmental, but when asked what they mean by this the features presented are very different from one another. Some call their coaching developmental in contrast with remedial coaching. Some say that they work with more than skills and performance when they call it developmental, seeing their client as a whole person and searching for underlying tendencies and traits to help them reach their goals. Some say that coaching is developmental only if it is informed by special types of developmental theories such as Kegan's, Torbet's or others. Some say that all coaching is developmental just because it brings all sorts of change in the client. So what is then developmental coaching?

In this session we will explore a new framework for developmental coaching based on three notions of self. Depending on the needs of the client four different types of coaching will be offered: coaching towards a healthy ego; coaching the ego; coaching beyond the ego and coaching the soul. The examples of coaching themes for each of these types will be discussed and experimented with. We will also explore how different coaching and counselling approaches based on various theoretical traditions are compatible with this developmental approach.

Dr Tatiana Bachkirov is an academic, a coach and a coaching supervisor with a background in Organisational Psychology�and Counselling.

Brain to Brain - Beyond Emotional Intelligence - Paul Brown

The modern brain sciences are making it very clear that there is a wealth of information about the way people interact together. Good coaches really do need to have it in their tool bag. If Freud was essentially wrong, what is essentially right?� This session develops an understanding of how the brain works, how coaching is a special case of establishing limbic resonance, what coaches could do with that knowledge, and what the qualities of the limbic leader are.

Professor Paul Brown is a clinical and organisational psychologist by ancient training and long-standing practice.

Brief Coaching - a solution focused approach - Evan George

Solution focus is growing in therapy, in counselling, in consultation, in conflict resolution and in coaching and leadership. The approach is effective and brief - an average of less than 4 sessions. This workshop will explore the key elements of the solution focused approach to coaching. It will highlight the underpinning thinking and the difference between problem and solution focused approaches. It will explore two of the key practice frameworks and give participants the opportunity to experiment with them. It will engage participants and those who attend will have to be prepared to accept the risk that at the end of the workshop they will want to know more! Work might never be the same again.

Coaching Supervision - New Practice Or Borrowed Clothes? - Edna Murdoch & Miriam Orriss

In this lively workshop, we will use brief teaching inputs, structured discussion, case study exploration and co-operative enquiry to explore the main themes in coaching supervision.

Our aim is to deepen coach and counsellors' perception of what coaching supervision does, how it works, and how similar/dissimilar it is in relation to clinical supervision.

Participants will discover what coaching supervision owes to therapeutic theory and practice, trainings offered, buyers' perspectives, supervision and coaches' accreditation, accreditation of coach supervisors. We will briefly refer to the Coaching and Mentoring Project (providers, buyers, practitioners) and to current discussion within EMCC, AC, ICF.

In addition, we will consider in small groups, two recent case studies, which highlight both the differences and the similarities between coaching and clinical supervision and which will stimulate discussion.

Participants will be introduced to the Full Spectrum Model of Coaching Supervision, which will form a basis for considering key areas of supervision:� relationship in coaching/clinical supervision, co-created learning, differences in contracting contexts, systemic focus, developing coaching competencies through supervision, unconscious factors, ethics/standards and the economic climate.

This interactive workshop will be informative and engaging, and will have up-to-date perspectives on the current practice of coaching supervision.

The Social Entrepreneurial view of Coaching for Success, both in the commercial and social care sectors - Viv Ahmun

We want to share what we've learned about becoming even more successful service providers in an environment that is increasingly recognizing the importance of coaching.

With the wave of cuts heading towards the public sector over the next 3 years, and the resulting explosion in unemployment, the highest in 17 years, experts argue that it will fall to small and medium sized businesses to stimulate the economy and create employment opportunities whilst generating much needed revenue for the country.

Coaches will play a critical part in the recovery process, both in terms of supporting the unemployed back into employment and supporting the business sector's efforts to deal with the challenges associated with achieving financial success in a volatile and highly competitive global market.

Based on our own experiences, we argue that this massive challenge and unprecedented opportunity will require coaches who bring an entrepreneurial and innovative approach to their practice.

This new breed of coach will also be expected to be a highly effective entrepreneur able to sell herself and her service in what will increasingly be a highly fluid and increasingly influential sector.

Personal consultancy as a model of integration - Debra Jinks & Nash Popovic

The workshop will be discursive and interactive and encourage input from the audience throughout. There will be three main parts. To start Nash will introduce his model of Personal Consultancy as a coherent framework that combines the disciplines of coaching and counselling and guidance as to how to manage the boundary. This will include the �nuts and bolts' of the model - in other words - how to do it.� Following this Debra will talk about the research she conducted into coaches' opinions about Personal Consultancy and integration. We will wrap things up by exploring applicability of the Personal Consultancy model across different contexts and generate a more general discussion around integration and differentiation.

Where does counselling end and coaching begin? - Becky Wright

Personal Coaches have become a popular source of psychological support. Perhaps coaches are more comfortable than counsellors at seeing their services as a brand to market. Becky Wright is a Psychotherapist who also has a thriving coaching practice, Harley Street Coaching. She offers a personal perspective on making the transition from counsellor to coach and discusses how the co-existence of the two professions has clearly made fertile ground for disagreement, but also new opportunities. She wants to explore as a therapist some of the internal psychological shifts and processes which need to happen to make the transition from counsellor to coach. She also wants to offer some suggestions on how to develop a counselling practice to encompass coaching which will not involve you having to become a guru of social media or indeed need to turn everything you do into a masterclass for others.

Using technology within an online coaching practice - applications, ethics and practice - Kate Anthony

As more coaching professionals use the Internet to provide services, promote their practices, or simply to engage with friends and family, there is a need for greater understanding of the potential ethical dilemmas which may arise for those with an online presence. A global ethical framework now exists and it is necessary for online coaching to be embraced.� Ideally, this framework should exist alongside a global registry of trained, ethically practicing Internet coaches. If cyberspace is an environment that transcends global boundaries, then a view that international guidelines should be possible is entirely appropriate and should be encouraged.

This session describes the Online Coach Institute's Ethical Framework for the Use of Technology in Coaching, discussing such issues as online competency; the importance of encrypted services; online training; online supervision; website content; crisis information; informed consent; assessment; and contracting.� Delegates will be invited to discuss their own use of technology in their work and discover solutions to issues that have arisen in light of Web 2.0 functionalities, such as clients following on Twitter, abusing communication channels and asking for Facebook friendship or a LinkedIn connection.�

The baby boomers are ageing - and it's bringing its problems! - Keren Smedley

This session will:

  • 1. Highlight specific issues affecting the 20.2million 50+
  • 2. Outline reasons for focusing on this age group, looking at the 1960s and social change.
  • 3. Identify issues that affect the 50+ in personal life and work.

a) Ageism- 2006 legislation.

b) Changes in the workplace - technological changes, 24/7 demands, expectations of immediacy.

c) The Sandwich Generation- between children and elderly parents and their conflicting demands.

d) Divorce- has increased leaving more men and women living alone, as single parents, or wanting to find new relationships. Others are managing re-constituted families.

e) Physical health- physical changes inevitably take place and this can bring on stress.��

f) Finance and Pensions- many are in a different financial position than they had expected and are unsure how they will manage.

g) Retirement- some long for it but then find it lonely and difficult, whilst others dread retirement and do not plan for it.

h) Goals, Aspirations, Motivation. With life expectancy into the 80s there is plenty of time for people to start new ventures and a necessity to stay motivated and vibrant.�
